Hello everyone,
Please check me out today on National Public Radio (NPR) for what I think will be a great episode of News and Notes. We will discuss recent developments in Barack Obama's campaign:
Here are the topics:
Ralph Nader says that Barack Obama is "talking white"
"He wants to show that he is not a threatening . . . another politically threatening African-American politician," Nader said. "He wants to appeal to white guilt. You appeal to white guilt not by coming on as black is beautiful, black is powerful. Basically he's coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it's corporate or whether it's simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites just eat it up." (source)
Nancy Pelosi wants to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, Obama says 'not so fast' (source)
Barack Obama's bid for presidency creates a surge in racist activity (source)

Alarming bit about the increase in racist web site traffic...I've said it before: this is going to be a LONNNGGGG election season.
What I hate too is the fact that when so many "pundits" insist Obama is a Muslim, he has to deny it, but it makes him look like there's something wrong with being a Muslim, or that he's against Muslims, even when he is not. Setting him up all over the place
Randi,
You're right, it's a setup. Many people don't understand that political strategists get paid $$$ to create Catch-22 situations like that.
The GOP has tuned that technique into a fine art, and Democrats fall for it every time.
Sad that in 2008, the image of Black men remain homogeneous! Nader's comments reveal how little is understood about the diversity in African-American community and leadership. I have not listened to N&N all week but will definitely listen to you all this evening!
Ralph Nader is just trying to get attention! I can't believe that he said that Barack Obama was "talking white". Why do educated black men and women have to deal with this crap.
I do think that Barack Obama could pay more attention to the poor, but most black people aren't poor, so we need to reverse that stereotype as well.
good point by randi523 about Obama being set-up by pundits. The ridiculousness in reporting is one reason why for the most part, I have ceased watching news on television. The only reason to watch, IMO, is to learn what people are up to and how they are doing it (i.e. what are the "phrases" and "catch words" being thrown around? (.e.g. Lou Dobb's love of saying "communist China". How are topics framed? etc.)
(from the last article you posted):
The groups now portray his candidacy as a vehicle to disenfranchise whites.
wow. I saw this coming a mile away and have seen glimpses of it whenever I read comments following articles on Obama. There are some ignorant white people out there who CHOOSE to believe what they want to believe. I still don't know how to react to these types of statements.
off-topic:
"talking white" comment aside, I think Nader made some good points about Obama in that video clip. I haven't heard him speak out strongly about predatory lending practices in the "ghetto." I haven't heard him speaking out strongly about the fact that blacks don't get rates as good as whites from the bank, even when they are well off. I read about the discount he received on his mortgage. Good for him. What about the rest of us who are judged by our skin color when we walk into the bank?
Obama doesn't even have to go far for material: Michelle Singletary and others have written about this for years.
He of course will be (is) influenced by the industries supporting him. And right now, he really doesn't look too different than other politicians.
good morning, femmautonome,
I also think that Nader made very good points, other than the 'talking white' comment.
Unfortunately, his asinine 'talking white' quip eclipsed his other comments.
By exposing his troubling racial opinions, Nader gave Obama supporters a reason to ignore the rest of his interview -- and further excuse to fail to explore the level of validity to his criticism of Obama.
He should be called on the carpet and made to explain his 'talking white' comment. Barack Obama should be made to respond to the rest of the commentary.
In the blogosphere, I noticed that a lot of black folk are responding with 'poverty isn't a black issue' because 'most black people are not poor'. That reasoning sends chills down my spine.
Should middle class folk only care about ourselves? How does that differ from white people who don't care about our issues because 'they aren't black?'
If we need a personalized reason to care, we should remember that a significant amount of us who are not in poverty are at increased risk for sliding into poverty after an illness or other life interruption.
Please spare a thought for your sisters in the uk today
White female stabs Black Girl in heart over boy and walks free
Halima,
I went to the site and made a comment. Hopefully it will appear soon.
Enlightening show. I agree with Randi it is gonna be a long election season.
Halima, I will check out the story on the blog. Thank you for sharing the information.
Halima, that story seems alot less about racism and alot more about irresponsible youths. That gir should most definitely have not walked free, as I don't know how one can use self-defence as their excuse when involved in a gang fight.
However, the victim who was killed was no innocent bystander. She grabbed a knife, jumped on someones back and started hitting their head. I live in the UK(as you do) so I know alot about how bad things have gotten in regards to knife and gun crime amongst teenagers in Britain today. I am not going to make excuses for that girl just because she is black. How will a parent know that their child is going around in gangs and not do anything about it?!
However, the white female should most definitely have served time as that was not a real case of self-defense!
thanks folks
I concur Jalilimaster,
I do believe that the white girl should be pusnished, but I don't believe that the black girl was innocent. Don't get me wrong, it breaks my heart that she's dead, but I can't deny that she was just as much as an aggressor. After all, she was nicknamed "Pitbull" by her peers.
After all, she was nicknamed "Pitbull" by her peers.
Do you know what chelsea was nicknamed?
After all, she was nicknamed "Pitbull" by her peers.
Do you know what chelsea was nicknamed?--Halima
Nope, and I don't need to know Chelsea's nickname since the fact that she stabbed someone and was part of a gang fight tells me a lot about her character already. I don't like the verdict and I'm glad you posted it, but I don't see race as a huge factor with this one. I see it as another tragic case of a black girl losing her life and over what???
Well Camilla was nicknamed 'rottweiler' by Princess Di. That doesn't say much. The girl being nicknamed 'pitbull' means nothing to me, as it could have come from anywhere. However, do to the circumstances surrounding her untimely death, it is only going to be interpreted one way.....negatively! It is all just so tragic and unfortunate.
It looks like my comments won't be posted on the Daily Mail...oh well
I hope there is an episode of the Queen's Council tonight. I always enjoy listening.
Hi everyone,
I have been hoving on the brink of exhaustion all week! I miss blogging so much, and have so much to write down. I'll let you know if there is a Queens' Council this afternoon.
@halima: that's a HORRIBLE story! Is there anywhere in the world that black females can get a break from violence and ridicule?
Please keep us posted on any new developments (her family's options, etc)
Sorry folks, we are going to have to postpone today's podcast. However, I am finishing up the next installment of the Queenly Art of Political Warfare, and we will resume our podcast next week.
Thanks for all of the emails and phone calls. All is well! I simply have to take some time to manage some offline projects and to get work/life balance in order.
I am NOT going anywhere...
Blessings!
@halima: that's a HORRIBLE story! Is there anywhere in the world that black females can get a break from violence and ridicule?
Unfortunately no, not even in the Motherland are Black women safe from racist sexist hatred. Just shows us even more that we need to stop looking for a safe place or a safe group to hide out in or among. We are truly alone in our struggle in that we don't even have the majority of Black womanhood on our side. Too many male-identified Black women for that.
I may be the odd woman out, but I find that rather freeing. We can choose whatever strategy we wish since we have no defenders. No one has the moral right to tell us how we must fight this so any and all options are open to us. We have no one to impress. In fact, impressing folk should not be our agenda right now. It should be simply to get these folks off our backs. If someone's attacking me physically, my first issue is not to try to impress them with me so that they find me somehow "too good" to harm. No, it's to get that fool off of and away from me, and if that means s/he has to die for me to be physically safe then so be it. I've no qualms about that. And I will NOT get a case of the guilties for daring to defend and protect my own life (and daring to view my Black, female life as WORTH protecting and defending).
I think that is where Black women of the world are now. We've been trying to reason with this world for 500 years that we too are human and the world ain't tryin' to hear that. I often feel that the only way the world will listen is if the message gets out that Black women are starting to take folk out now. "Don't mess with them Black b&*(hes! They killin' mofos now!" If that's the only way folk'll leave us in peace then so be it!
And I will NOT get a case of the guilties for daring to defend and protect my own life (and daring to view my Black, female life as WORTH protecting and defending).--Witchsistah
Speaking of protection, I had my first round of shooting lessons today. It was tough but worth it. Can't wait to go again.

Wow! That's for real!
Wow, Lormarie! Congratulations! Be sure to give us more details at the podcast!
Lol, Lormarie means business!
[I meant to post this here, and not in the previous comments, sorry]
Hey SheCodes, hope you're doing well. Looking forward to your posts next week!
Did you see last night's episode of "The First 48"? (it's a reality series following homicide detectives in the first 48 hours after homicides in Memphis, Detroit, Miami, and Dallas). Well, last night's episode featured the Lester St. killings. I was reminded all over again about how horrible that situation was.
Anyway, I just wanted to see if anyone caught that progarm.
Hi,
I am at the Net Roots Conference. I'm live blogging from the Women's Caucus as we speak.

Hey There! Just checking in on you! I pray that all is well with you and yours!

Is this blog still up and running?
Are you on vacation or did you find a new man or something?
Hey anonymous,
I am alive and well. I am travelling, writing, and building the next generation of BlackWomenVote. We will be back up ad and running within a few days.
I am also working on a video version of The Queens' Council, which will launch next week.
I will start running the blog remotely from Grenada for the month of August -- hopefully from a beach somewhere! :-)
Thanks for checking up on me... Shecodes is not going anywhere.
Good to hear from you!
Lady Codes, glad to hear you are okay. Grenada, aaahhhh. Nice warm, tropical setting...don't think I would be able to concentrate on writing...lol. I would be too busy trying to find some water to wade in...and coconuts to crack open, and roast fish. :)
Oh Nice to hear from you, Shecodes!
You have no idea how I have bitten my fingers trying not to send you an email of concern as to your where abouts.
Glad to hear all is well.
Shecodes, I've been wondering what was up with you. Looking forward to the video version of TheQueensCouncil.

Witchsistah,
I read the checklist. Honestly, I don't see black men as being able to benefit from male privilege as much as is claimed by the author.
As black women, we have our issues. But I generally feel safer in the US being a black woman rather than a black man. That's not an insult, but an observation.
I'd rather deal with the "white images of beauty" than knowing that I am targeted by police or by racists for hate crimes.
@witchsistah
"Just shows us even more that we need to stop looking for a safe place or a safe group to hide out in or among."
I totally agree with your comment, I don't waste time trying to look for a safe haven or group because it ain't going to happen.
"We've been trying to reason with this world for 500 years that we too are human and the world ain't tryin' to hear that."
When we wake up and realize how important and valuable we as black women are and how sacred our wombs are and that this war of trying to eliminate the black women goes further beyond 500 years. Then we will realize that the only way to solve it is to fight back and win, which means if I have to learn how to shoot a gun I will do so, if i have to learn Judo I will do so, if I have to learn how to make a bomb and put it to use I will do so..
hi there-
i miss you Shecodes! i fully understand busy and exhaustion:-)though. i pray that this time is restful, rejuvenating, and right on time for you.
Lormarie, to your point, black men don't oftentimes profit from the exploitation and rampant sexism the same way that other men do. however, black men do exercise male privilege oftentimes in the most obnoxious, offensive ways imaginable because of their lack of access to the seat of power.
in fact, the exploitation and abuse of black women by black men is called "black culture" in some circles. i am beyond tired of the sisters that fight relentlessly to maintain this system---i am not speaking of you in this instance.
the notion that somehow you are safer as a black woman than black men are is not a position with which i can agree. black women now and have always been subjected to the same abuses reserved for black men, hence Sojourner Truth's ain't i a woman, too.
in the absense of male genitalia to castrate, black women have endured gang rape and other tortures, in addition to lynching, mutilation, police brutality, racial profiling, hate crimes, racist stereotypes, etc.
at this point in time, in addition to being concerned with others taking liberties with you, now, sisters must be very concerned with brothers---stiff penalties for our abuse have not been enforced by our men or us. i for one am not interested in waiting for black men to act on my behalf. i believe we must do it for ourselves. this is why i love this blog and others like it.
the beauty standards are the least of my concerns. i have long ago rejected it as the bassackwards ways of this backwards world. i strongly urge other black women to do the same. i am more concerned with the open season that has been declared on black women. in many respects, quite a few black men in their quest to be considered men are leading the way (others won't do it so blatantly, that would be...racist:-) in the assault. unwittingly damaging themselves in the process.
i would really like to see black women undertake the unpopular task of separating our interests from our brothers. our interests require our full attention and efforts. our brothers do not require this advice.
blessings,

I think that most of the abuse that black women suffer is via other blacks. But from the perspective of the larger society, black women face less hostilities whether it was during Jim Crow or today. Most victims of race hate crimes are black men just as they are more often victims of police brutality. That is not to say that black women have it easy, but I believe that we have more clout than most of us are aware of. Therefore, we should allow that advantage in society to work for us in our fight.

Agreed 100%. I have been toying around with some ideas to get this message out. When I get more info, I'll bring it to this forum.
Hey Ladies,
Did anyone see this?
http://www.advicegoddess.com/archives/2008/08/11/who_places_a_lo.html
She recently made an racially offensive comment about black women. Specifically that the black woman who was shot by police valued black lives less than the police who shot her. White feminists have already jumped all over her. We should do the same.
Just checking in on you. I pray that all is well with you and yours!
Blessings!
that woman actually wrote
"women in the black community who squeeze out litters of fatherless children...
Litters???? Squeeze out? So now these women ( who do make indisputably stupid decisions) are being referred to in language typically reserved for animals such as dogs?
This Is Just to Say

Jingle, Bells
(1)
Dashing thro' the snow,
In a one-horse open sleigh,
O'er the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bobtail ring,
Making spirits bright;
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight!
(Refrain:) Jingle, bells! Jingle, bells!
Jingle all the way!
Oh! What fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh!
(2)
Now the ground is white,
Go it while you're young;
Take the girls tonight,
And sing this sleighing song.
Just get a bob-tailed bay,
Two-forty for his speed;
then hitch him to an open sleigh,
And crack! You'll take the lead.

The increased racist activity isn't shocking to me. I live in the south, and anytime a Black person is about to receive a head position in politics, education, etc., racist Whites (in some areas) tend to increase their ignorant actions and/or comments.
About the Ralph Nader comment...what else is new? I find it funny that he said this b/c I've heard it all my life, but it was from Black people. My response is, we don't talk White, we talk Right.
