Setting the Black Female Agenda

Black women are not a monolith. We are a diverse, dynamic, multi-dimensional community of women, with varying opinions, tastes and priorities.

However, we do have certain commonalities that are very serious in nature, which require a united effort to overcome. We all live, work, and breathe in a precarious, double-tiered nexus of racism and misogyny. We face both white racio-misogyny and black racio-misogyny -- two sides of the same evil coin -- and this coin is coated with the emerging threat of financial classicism.

If there was ever a time for black women to unite, it is now. We have never had more money, we have never had more education, we have never had a bigger voice, we have never had more powerful tools for communication.

The winds of change are blowing in America... our political climate is heating up tremendously. This is our opportunity! For it is much easier to bend iron while it is already hot! We have been shackled with the iron manacles of racism and sexism... but those manacles are heating up -- it is time to strike them and break free.

If we 'toe the line' and are quiet, obedient followers during this political season, we can fully expect to have a cool bar of iron to bend in a few years. We must strike when the iron is hot!

Our issues are political, social, and financial. Most of us understand that different strategies are needed for each of these arenas, and that is why we need different kinds of warriors in the battle.

We need political rooks. We need financial bishops. We need social queens. We need political queens. We need financial rooks. We need...

This blog is a clarion call to all of the black female warriors in the blogosphere. Come! And let us reason together.

Our blogs are just a tiny beginning, but they shall serve a tremendous purpose. Our blogs will prophesy to a valley of dry bones, and when we speak, flesh and sinew will form over our women, and they will come to life -- and form a great and fearsome army.

We do not have to agree on everything. We do not have to agree on HOW to do everything. But we must agree to change things.

I encourage you to think about what the Black Female Agenda should be, and to post it on your blogs. I will lead by example, and post what I think here...

The Black Female Agenda

1. Family Integrity. We want healthy, supportive environments in our homes. We want a national climate that is conducive to producing mutually satisfying, loving and equal family dynamics for any black woman that desires to marry and raise a family. We want a plethora of marital options. We want a national climate that is supportive of black women who elect to remain single or childless.

2. Media Integrity. We want to be represented truthfully in media. We want to be the final arbiters of what is an 'accurate' depiction of the average black American woman. We want to be able to own and control our own media outlets.

3. Financial Integrity. We want to be financially empowered to control our own destinies. We want to exercise our full rights as American citizens to create and manage wealth for ourselves and our families.

4. Educational Integrity. We want educational opportunities that will make our children and ourselves intensely competitive in the world's markets. We want fair and balanced educational treatment of our children, and we want to have the final say on what is taught to our children about the black experience in America.

5. Safety. We want freedom from ALL violence. We want to exercise our right to express ourselves, improve ourselves, and BE ourselves without the threat of violent retribution by anyone. We want to be safe in our neighborhoods, in our homes, and on our jobs. Our safety will never be on the negotiating table for any strategy that will be employed by anyone, including that of the black community.

6. Health. We want to be physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy and whole. We want to create the the tools and pathways for our total health, without undue resistance from any source. We want a national and local environment that is conducive to maintaining our established physical, mental, and emotional health.


These six affirmative statements are the basis of this blog, and are the underlying precepts to the upcoming Black Women's Network.
