We have started a fund to help Citoya Greenwood, a grassroots community activist, young mother, and student to move out of Dunbar Village. She lived four houses down from a horrific event, detailed here.
Citoya has worked tirelessly to improve the current situation in this particularly troubled area in West Palm Beach, Florida. However, many of us agree that it is urgently critical for her to remove herself living in that situation!
Black Women Vote! has started an emergency fund that will help her move herself and her daughter into a safer situation. Every dime of the fund will go to Citoya... if you would like to make a donation, you can do so by clicking on the 'donate' button on the right side of this page.
Other ways that you can help:
1.) If you have any clout with any educational institutions that have family housing, or scholarships/grants, email me asap at shecodes1@gmail.com. Our ultimate goal is to get her to transfer into a 4 year institution with family housing. She is very strong academically, and will also meet almost all financial need requirements.
2.) You can send her an encouraging email.
She has really been hit hard by these latest events, and feels quite alone. (We haven't mentioned everything) She could really use some encouraging emails right about now. People can send emails to my account shecodes1@gmail.com, just put "Citoya" in the subject line... and I will make sure that she gets them immediately.3.) If you know anyone who has decision-making authority with non-section 8 housing assistance
, please email me.4.) Please feel free to contact others who do not read this blog to tell her story -- Symphony is working on her bio so that people will really understand what a jewel she is.
Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I have never done anything like this before, but felt that talking about this situation is no longer enough -- I had to DO something. Thank you for feeling the same way! You are all Queens in the truest, most literal sense of the word.

I just sent a donation. I read about the tragedy last week and my heart turned over. I'm amazed at how bad some of our neighborhoods have gotten.
Please keep us posted on how Citoya is doing.
Hey Shecodes, I just donated and I'm going to encourage sistas and others who read my blogs to DO so. If everybody just adds in their lil bit, she'll be okay. We have to start DOING more and stop just TALKING. No one takes you seriously if you JUST talk.
If more bw started DOING, then more sistas would come out of the shadows and fight back because they'd know that we all have their back.
I don't believe in people just talking. You gotta SHOW me.
So I'd encourage everyone who reads this blog to donate money and those of us who have blogs should put the word out quickly because she could be in danger. We need to 'show up and show out' to the extent we can in this sista's life because talking alone is not going to change much at all.
I donated yesterday. Thanks for giving me a chance to DO something.
@Jamilah,
Thank you for your donation. I'll definitely keep everyone posted!

@evia,
That's awesome! I honestly feel that this is going to be a year of breakthroughs for black women.
I am truly encouraged by the outpouring of support for Citoya. I believe more in the power of determined and focused women than I do for any political party or regime.
It is time for us to talk and MOVE at the same time.
Shecodes,
I put an announcement on my blog for people to donate to the fund. I hope to help in anyway I can.
Thanks, tasha! :-D
This is disappointing news. I added the request for donations to my blog.
I'm in.
I just donated as well.
I hope everything works out for Citoya and her child.
God bless her.
I just donated and will add a request on my blog.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to give to this amazing young woman.
I listened to Citoya on one of the Black Women Roundtable podcast and was so impressed with her leadership and courage in this fight.
Evia I so agree with your comment. Its time to put up or shut up.
Of course I donated to the cause. I hope she can get out of there ASAP.
Shecodes, I sent you a private email. I'm currently directing one of our programs at a state university, and if she applies and is competitive, I may be able to wrangle a diversity fellowship for her. Please respond to me privately about this.
There is one college that comes to mind it's in the midwest very very good college it's called College of Saint Mary www.csm.edu check it out they even have daycare on campus and housing for single moms please hurry deadlines are not far behind for private grands and fafsa
SheCodes -I've reposted part of this post onto my blog. with credits.
Is there an address to send a money order?
Hi everyone
I just donated as well and was wondering: What about t-shirts? Is this too crass an idea bearing in mind the sensitivity of Citoya's situation?. If you guys feel this, please ignore and I send good energy to erase this thought.
Thank you for giving us this opportunity to help.
SheCodes, I prefer to mail a check. Is there a mailing address? I am away in Panama, and have not been able to keep in touch, but I am very concerned.
Saludos desde Panama,
Ana
Not only have I sent money, as I mentioned earlier, Shecodes, but I wrote an essay on my blog about this.
@Anxious, thanks, I sent you a private message!
@Anonymous, I'll ask Professor Tracey to look into that college... she has begun working with Citoya on getting her academic affairs in order...
@Anonymous2 & Ana, I'll ask my church if we can use their mailing address to receive payments. (I don't trust any mailing to Citoya's current address). Make checks and money orders out to "Citoya Greenwood", and check back later today for a post that will include a mailing address.
@Chandy, Tami, emergingphoenix, tryexcellence, katrina, and others: (hugs) thank you! I have a message from Citoya that I will post later today.
@PioneerValleyWoman: that's awesome... I'll check it out...
THIS IS A YEAR OF NEW. CITOYA PLEASE KEEP YOUR HEAD UP AND GOD WILL SHE YOU THREW THIS. HAVE FAITH CITOYA.
Chandy, I will look into the T-shirt idea. Someone suggested that we get a logo of a chess piece, to raise awareness of an emerging black women's movement.
I think that may be a good start...
Thank you Shecodes for putting the word out here. I luv u Shecodes. I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been praying for me and my daughter. From the bottom of my heart thank you. Im glad that someone else care about whats going on. Please keep us lifted up. May god bless everyone. Much luv and I feel good about this. Luv Citoya
*sniffing*
We love you too, Citoya. Now start packing, cause you're getting OUTTA there!
Here, you are a sister, a daughter and a mother.
You are always welcome.
I hope that the little bit I just donated will help. This was just as important as my voting in the MD Primary last week. Good luck and God bless Citoya and I will make sure that you and your daughter are in my prayers.
SheCodes,
May I have permission to post your message on my blog?
@SakuraAvalon1117, thank you so much! Sorry I didn't see this message earlier.
@Shane, of course! You can cross post anything of mine, anytime.
HAVE WE FORGOTTEN ABOUT THE OTHER SINGLE MOTHERS WHO LIVE IN THAT AREA? ALSO THE OLDER MEMBERS IN THAT COMMUNITY WHO WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE ALSO? I THINK WE NEED TO DO A LITTLE MORE RESEARCH AND SEE IF THERE IS A WAY TO HELP ALL OF THEM. THIS IS JUST MY OPINION.
WE NEED TO LOOK INTO THIS STORY A LITTLE CLOSER. I'M FROM THAT AREA AND THERE IS MORE THAN JUST CITOYA WHO NEEDS THE HELP. WE NEED TO HELP THAT WHOLE COMMUNITY INCLUDING THE VICTIMS.
ill make sure to donate right now.
god bless her and the black women vote! for helping.
